Fire and Smoke Curtains

Fire curtain systems are vital in buildings because they act as a critical safety barrier during a fire, preventing the spread of flames, smoke, and heat.

Fire Curtains

Fire Curtains are automatic or fixed barriers made from fire-resistant materials. They deploy during a fire to compartmentalise spaces, prevent the spread of flames and heat, and maintain structural integrity.

Smoke Curtains

Smoke Curtains primarily prevent the spread of smoke in buildings by directing or containing it. They’re often used in conjunction with smoke extraction systems to maintain a tenable environment during evacuation.

The National Building Code of India (NBC 2016) mandates passive fire protection measures, especially in high-rise buildings, malls, airports, hospitals, factories, and warehouse.

Relevant NBC Sections

  • Fire and Life Safety emphasizes compartmentation, smoke management, and safe egress routes.

  • Clause 3.4.10 (Smoke Control): Recommends the use of smoke containment systems for large spaces like atriums and basements.

  • Clause 3.4.7 (Compartmentation): Calls for physical barriers (like fire curtains) to limit fire to the area of origin.

Key Roles of Curtains per NBC

  • Replace or supplement fire doors and walls without obstructing aesthetics.

  • Enable open-plan architecture while meeting fire safety codes.

  • Act as automatic compartmentation tools when integrated with fire alarm systems.
